William J. Kelly - better known as Bill - has volunteered with the CA for many years. He is the CA's Coordinator of International Programs, a title that makes sense, given Bill's passion for all things foreign and his heavy involvement in providing opportunities for all nationalities, both here in America and overseas. This passion goes back to his decision in 1957, as a teenager, to begin studying Russian on his own. He majored in Russian and has a Ph.D. in economics from Rice University. He currently is working on "A Tadjik - Uzbek - English - Russian Dictionary and Phrase Book" (together with Firuza Muradova).
For many years he conducted research on science, technology, and economic issues in foreign countries, principally with Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Bill's work at Battelle included the publication of a major study on the Soviet Union entitled, Energy Research and Development in the USSR, Duke University Press, 1986 (together with Hugh L. Shaffer and J. Kenneth Thompson).
In addition to his work with the CA, Bill is engaged in volunteer work at his church, Christ Presbyterian Church (Marlton, NJ) where he is active in mission work and serves on Session. His volunteer work has included teaching English to refugees and other immigrants and teaching Russian to Americans. Bill continues his interest in economics, especially in the area of migration.
In recent years, he has become interested in the work of his grandfather (Rev. William Kelly, MD), a medical missionary who went to China in 1899 and spent most of his adult life there. After a visit to China in 1997 Bill began to develop a hospitality ministry at the CA for international students, known as SLANGuage.
