UCC Volunteer Ministries

“Partners in Service” Program

The Partners in Service program, offered through the Volunteer Ministries Office of the United Church of Christ, provides a variety of opportunities for service in diverse settings across the country. Volunteers serve terms of two weeks to a year or more.

The program is open to adults of all ages, skilled and unskilled, who are eager to serve, and have a willingness to learn and, at the same time, wish to gain a better understanding of themselves. Young and older adults are equally encouraged to participate. International volunteers are placed upon the recommendation of partners in the Ecumenical Diaconal Year Network and recognized church partners of the United Church of Christ.

Partners in Service is so titled because it is organized as a three way partnership among the volunteer, the hosting agency (project), and the Volunteer Ministries Office. Applications are made through the Volunteer Ministries Office (log on to the UCC website at www.ucc.org/volunteer and request an application packet). Once the volunteer application is accepted, a placement with a hosting agency is negotiated, through the Office.

Application deadlines:

Long term (9-12 mo): May 1 for September placement, September 1 for January placement

Summer: April 1 for a late May/early June start

Short term (2-8 mo), Sabbatical, or Weekly (2-6 weeks): three months prior to desired starting date

F.A.S.T. (Faithful Advocates Serving Together)—joint summer program of the UCC and Disciples

A 9-10 week internship in the Appalachian region around Alderson, WV for the first half of the summer and Cosby, TN during the latter part of the season. Interns will provide leadership for groups as they accompany members of the Alderson Ministerial Association and Sunset Gap Community Center working with housing issues in the region. Interns help groups reflect on issues of economic justice in light of the work they are doing with their hands and people they meet during the week.
