What do the volunteers do?
A minimum of ten volunteers is needed to work as peacemaker artists with children from 3rd to 6th grade (8 to 13 years old) in small groups as well as one-on-one.  Volunteers work together to facilitate small group activities with children.

How does this work?
The program runs on Friday afternoons from 3:30-6:30 p.m.  Volunteers meet at the CA House and will be bussed from campus to the site and back.

Whom are you looking for?
Students who will make a commitment to weekly involvement to work with children who are surrounded by violence, and who recognize the importance of teaching peacemaking skills. Volunteers must be responsible, dedicated to this work, and willing to be trained. In addition, volunteers must have good interpersonal skills and be able to create trust and have a love of children. We expect maturity but also a playfulness. Artistic skills are helpful but not necessary.  There is no faith requirement.

What does this have to do with Penn and the Christian Association?
As a faith-based organization concerned with peace and justice, the Christian Association believes this unique opportunity will supplement the Ivy League education as students become more familiar with peacemaking literature and teaching techniques which they can use in this real-life laboratory. We believe giving attention to this issue in a positive way will also raise awareness of the extent violence pervades the lives of inner-city children and we are hopeful student volunteers will become citizen advocates on their behalf.

Do I have to be religious or a Christian to volunteer?

No.  Each volunteer will be asked, however, to think through his or her own values and attitudes toward peace and violence, and our societal responsibility to protect the most vulnerable. Religious and humanistic language will be used to express values of respect, civility, understanding and tolerance.  We recognize that while personal motivation may differ amongst our volunteers, there are many people who are committed to the same ideals of peace, justice, and understanding.
