Annie Wu King, 1962

"I wanted to communicate with you about a couple of matters.  First of all, I wanted to let you know that when I arrived at Penn as a refugee from China and Hong Kong in 1959, it was difficult for me to relate to the culture I found in the States, even though I had lived in this country seven years as a child.  My concern for other nations and cultures was not shared by a lot of my classmates but it was at the Christian Association I found my “home” and became active in the World Affairs Committee (I believe that was what it was called then) and other programs at the CA.  I spent much time with my friends at the CA and found the type of concern and activism I needed.  I wish I could send you a larger check but financially it is difficult.  Please accept my small donation with heartfelt thanks.

As I read the news of the various programs you have, it makes my heart glad that what I gained from my association there has continued.  After I left Penn, I taught and did counseling in a university in Central Java, Indonesia for more than ten years, taught GED classes at Madison State Hospital in Indiana and have worked in Women’s Ministries for the Presbyterian Church (USA) as well as served as a psychotherapist in a center for Independent Living for people with disabilities.

While at the Univ. of Penn, I was asked to serve on the Board of the National Student Christian Federation and did that for several years.  That experience and the seminars and quadrennials put on by the organization were life-changing experiences for me and I have tried to support the World Student Christian Federation of which our US organization was a part.  In a recent letter from the WSCF, they requested that people send them names of “current progressive and activist oriented campus ministers throughout the US” to help them invigorate the Student Christian Movement in the US.  Of course I thought of the work with students you and others are doing at the CA.  (ed. note:  Rev Beverly Dale serves on the board of the WSCF.)

Wishing you peace and grace this blessed season.

Annie Wu King"
